Impacts

Pathways

  • Forms very dense thickets and out-compete native plants for space and resources, especially for sunlight.
  • Impacts on fish and invertebrate communities have been recorded.
  • Prevention of access to sites.
  • Planted in gardens, parks and demesnes.
  • Natural dispersal by seed and vegetative means and planted by people.

Management

Prevention

Avoid planting and restrict spread of existing plants.

Physical Control

Involves a tracked swing shovel with a rotary flail mounted on a moving hydraulic arm that may not be appropriate in sensitive conservation areas. Cutting using a chainsaw is also employed but should only be undertaken by skilled operators.

Chemical Control

Is best undertaken after mechanical clearance through Glyphosate injection into root stumps as direct spraying is usually ineffective because of the waxy leaf surface preventing adhesion and absorption.

Biological Control

Unknown.
